when I should have slept
I instead kept writing
a part-time sentinel of words
full-time in a fighting world

forget the comfort of double blankets
when you have double-checking
or the dog on my legs stretching
when you have mainly anonymous heckling

now it is tomorrow
the rain outside is whispering to me
put down your sword and shield
and yield to sleep
