they paddled tensely through the red river
avoiding getting smashed on the rocks and bones
as the electronic army descended upon them
dropping from the sky and sprinting by robot foot
like an ocean of twisting army ants
blinking off and on like broken lights
foraging for DNA for their supper
she slammed the booster controls
emptying their fuel but incinerating hundreds
rocketing into a more primitive county
that had not yet encountered this type of hunter
safe until the next satellite realignment
