Freeverse 133

8/18/19

the fields burn with the gasoline of labor
intensifying in the summer suns
in the wintertime ice bullets crash down
as workers grasp their barbed wire blankets
the fields must get worked
the fields must work you
antique speakers blast
another summer
another winter
another summer
another winter
each one twice as worse as the previous
the people forgot all their songs
they can barely remember what they are
they are just raking dirt
soon they will be raking their own bones
a flooding sweat jumps him out of bed
and he hugs his family twice as tight as the previous
